Using the “Test user” option in Grip Engage (for Event Organizers)

The 'Test user' option lets you temporarily sign in as an event participant to see exactly what they see. This is useful for checking profile setup, replicating issues or validating permissions without changing the participant’s password.

When Test user is enabled, Grip Engage generates a temporary password that overrides the attendee’s own password. Once you disable the toggle, the override ends, and the attendee can log in with their original password again.

This is especially helpful when:

  • You want to confirm if a participant’s profile looks correct
  • Someone reports not being able to access something
  • You need to test permissions or data visibility

⚠️ This option is only available to users with higher-level permissions in Grip Engage. You’ll also need to make sure the participant’s profile is active (i.e. they’ve claimed their account).

When and why to use it

Use Test user to: The Test user tool is useful for:

  • Checking how an attendee's profile appears
  • Verifying if certain features, content or permissions are working
  • Troubleshooting reports like "I can’t access this area" or "I don’t see my meetings"

It’s a quick way to log in as the participant, confirm what they’re seeing and capture screenshots for support or internal troubleshooting.

Tip: Keep your access short - just log in, check what you need, and sign out. The goal is quick verification, not prolonged testing to make sure there’s no impact on the event participant using the event platform.

Who Can Use It (Prerequisites)

You’ll only see the Test user toggle if:

  • You have one of the following roles in Grip Engage:
    • Implementation Partner Admin
    • App Admin
    • Event Expert+

IMPORTANT: Make sure the participant’s profile is active

(If the attendee hasn’t claimed their account yet, ask them to log in using their email + Registration or Badge ID, and create a password first.)

How it works

  1. Enable Test user on the profile

    In Grip Engage:

    • Go to the relevant event
    • Click on Data → All → All Data
    • Search for the participant by email (or use filters)
    • Open their profile
    • In their profile, go to the Settings tab
    • Scroll down to the bottom of the page
    • Tick the checkbox for Test user

This generates a temporary password for that event participant.

🔒 Their real password is not changed - this just creates a short-term password override.

Test User Option

  1. Log in using the temporary credentials

On the event platform login page, enter the event participant’s email and the autogenerated temporary password you just created. When you see the check mark confirming a successful login, you’ve verified access.

On the event platform login page:

    • Enter the participant’s email
    • Enter the temporary password from the Test user setup

Tip: If you're already viewing the participant’s profile in Grip Engage, scroll to the Basic Profile Information section and click “View profile” to open their profile directly on the event platform.

Alternatively, use the “View Event” button in the top-right corner of Grip Engage to open the full event platform homepage in a new tab.

  2. Immediately turn it off
Go back to the same profile in Grip Engage:

    • Return to Settings
    • Untick the Test user box

❗ If you forget to disable Test user, the participant won’t be able to log in with their normal password - so always switch it off right after testing.

FAQs

Q: I don’t see the Test user toggle - why?

A: You probably don’t have the required permissions. Speak to your delivery manager if this doesn’t seem right.

  • Login with the temp password fails? Confirm the email matches the profile exactly, ensure the profile is active/claimed, untick and re-tick Test user to refresh the temporary password, then try again.

Q: The temporary password isn’t working - what should I check?

A:

  • Make sure the email you used matches the profile exactly
  • Confirm the participant’s account is active (they must have claimed it)
  • Try unticking and re-ticking the Test user checkbox to refresh the password
  • Then try logging in again

Q: The participant can’t log in after I tested their account - what went wrong?

A: You likely left the Test user toggle enabled, which blocks their original login.

To fix it:

  1. Open their profile in Engage
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Untick Test user

If the toggle doesn’t turn off:

  • Refresh the page
  • Check your internet connection
  • Make sure no one else is logged in as that participant
  • Wait ~30 seconds and try again
